Rutgers week

On Durkin and the whole Maryland situation...

Someone who is more familiar than I am said "university president jobs are to raise money."  If Maryland president Wallace Loh has hire and fire authority (that the board does not have), he probably also has budget authority or at least responsibility (likely with approval at some level).  Anyway, he knows the budget and where he can or cannot get the money.

It seems like, with some exceptions, if he can raise it he can spend it.  Or, if he can find someone to spend it, he will do that.  Loh wanted Durkin out.  He had the funding.

More beating a dead horse...

Rutgers coach Chris Ash said "I don't blame Michigan for 78-0.  It is our job to stop it."  Their defensive coordinator chimed in with "I have enough trouble worrying about our program (doing what is best).  Let them do what is best for theirs."

And Michigan wanted revenge and to run it up against Penn State.  Motivational tactic?  The truth?  I get it.  But it works both ways.  If Michigan didn't want Penn State to hand the ball off with 10 seconds left they need to stop it.

Lastly, for now, Chris Ash will be a wealthy man when he leaves/gets fired at Rutgers.  He is not a bad guy, but he has failed.  I forget who they were playing, but I remember a game this year when they had a brief lead and he was running around cheering in every player's face.  Most of them looked as though they were either tired or unconcerned.

They won their first game this year and have lost every one since.  I do not follow the Scarlet Knights too closely, but the hiring of Jerry kill was desperate and a failure.  It is not going to improve with the nation's #66 recruiting class.  They should be able to win some of their out-of-conference games and a couple in the Big Ten each year.  It seems hopeless.  Chris Ash seems like a good enough guy.  In retrospect, it probably helps to hire a head coach with experience.
