Juwan Howard is clean and he will be a fine basketball coach. While the Fab Five has cracks but he has survived very well, and since then too. It was disappointing that the big names originally linked to the opening showed no interest at all. Ordinary D1 coaches would have been an even bigger gamble.
It is a bold move and nod to the pros. Howard has no NCAA coaching experience at all. Still, he seems to offer better-than-average potential in the short run, the prospect of being good in the future, and safety in terms of the rules. Being a Michigan man he knows that corruption will spoil the whole thing, present and past.
Beilein was at the top of his game at Michigan but it was a tenuous one. And he can be stubborn and hardheaded. The team took some hits with players leaving early and he let it be known, as he always has, that he does not like that part of the game. The recruiting, and especially grad transfer, trail is daunting and he does not like that either. Goodbye and long live the king.
Watching the NBA finals, those players are exceptional. They are so much better than Jordan and Iggy it is not even funny. This year they are better than Lebron and a few hundred other NBA players also.
From what I understand, Cleveland does not have a ton of talent either. Best of luck to him. It could be a long, i.e., very short, NBA career. He could go out with a thud rather than a bang.
Michigan basketball will survive. For now we have surprise entertainment in baseball.
