Hugh Freeze and Mississippi
Experts weigh in.
What has happened is the NCAA has upped the ante by about 100%--15 Level 1 violations--in an already very bad situation. Plus, they have added the most serious allegations possible in presumption of responsibility and failure to monitor.
It will take some time. At the same time, cuts, penalties, and firings are going to happen and the sooner the better.
Let's start with Hugh Freeze.
Anyone can watch the video pictured above and Hugh Freeze is a beaten man. He didn't even try to defend himself. It is obvious he does not have control.
"I didn't know" is no longer relevant. Cut hard and deep and start the rebuilding process now.
As for the University of Mississippi? Athletic Director Ross Bjork too is in over his head. He was hired after Hugh Freeze (Pete Boone, 2002-2012). The faster the higher-ups realize this the better.
The NCAA process is on display and it is not a bad one. It is sort of a combination of arbitration, mediation, and a judge with penalties. When it is this serious they are not just accusations. The more you fight the more that is likely to come out.
This is a case where it is obviously as close to bad to the core as you can get, but still there is back and forth. The may appear to be ineffective or subjective because it is driven by We Expect You to Police Yourself. Collectively, we will find a way to make that happen.
That all makes sense because constant, every detail monitoring by the NCAA is not possible and most people probably don't want to see an FBI-like presence. Plus, these are well-heeled places with smart people that are perfectly capable of doing things the right, agreed-upon way.
Sure, you have to negotiate and defend yourself. But when it is this serious it is not behind you by a long shot.
It may go back and forth--admit a little and offer some changes, only to await the reaction. But those are just details. It is about, there are going to be penalties, big-time penalties that affect the whole university, until it is corrected.
Contrition? Penalties? Cut hard, cut deep, and we'll see.
