From a distance the star signing thing is a disaster. If Derek Jeter or Tom Brady were supposed to be a draw, let alone Mike Shanahan, Lou Holtz, or some wrestler, well I don't know. My guess is there are lots of folks rooting against Michigan and Harbaugh. That's the thing--the brand isn't what it used to be. What's more, it never was.
Harbaugh will learn that it doesn't look good. No matter how you slice it, you don't dick people around and come out shining. We all know it is going to be a good class because, as the baseball trade saying goes, the team that gets the best player wins. EDIT: Super players on good teams make a difference. Rashan Gary will probably be relieved to know that, at least in public, it is over.
No Boss. I thought maybe Chase Allen (Sean McKeon duplicate?) and Donald Stewart. It doesn't look good, the Swenson thing, given the search for OLs; you never know if he could have fit in. Why didn't he just drive to Ann Arbor, and the whining after the fact almost never looks good. Devery Hamilton was a loss; maybe it is not for everyone, but it is Harvard with a great football team. Antwaine Richardson to Maryland/Durkin and the ACL injury is reason for concern but that wasn't a secret either. Sir Patrick to Marshall and Rashad Weaver to Pitt and Kiante Enis to Indiana.
Games back and forth with Penn State but the only other heavy hitters are Michigan State and Ohio State. The way it works these days is the big guys--e.g., Alabama, FSU, LSU, Clemson--swoop in and claim the ranked players. By now the pecking/player order has been refined. It is as much about stealing from your competitors--a strange way to define competitive advantage--as it is about gaining the talent yourself.
James Franklin had a top five class for a long time. There is the PWO QB win against Michigan.
The balls are starting to fall in the pockets. Lavert Hill--they said he stopped by to say he is going to MSU and alternatively that he visited Ann Arbor to check on his spot. They don't know anything. He seems like a good guy and a really good player and I bet Jourdan Lewis is somehow worthy of a thank you again.
The University of Southern California signed another kicker... There are people who pay attention to it on an hour by hour basis and they write or comment on it just as frequently. It must be an incredibly-major part of their lives. They don't know anything either. Maybe they are using a mobile device or maybe they are sitting in front of a computer. "Silent commit" were intimate buzzwords this year and it does provide insight into how it works. The coaches have to know so they can move on to the next kid (that is something else that was really evident--next on the board). You can understand that the recruit wants to announce it in his own way when he is ready, but respect-the-kid manners are impossible to define.
Quinn Nordin, the nation's best kicker and a Michigan native and fan to Michigan. Harbaugh can be appreciated for short periods if you feed him. The way it is all fitting, the D line. Given the house-guest thing, I expected Connor Murphy too. EDIT again: a full ride to private USC; his mother wanted him to go to Michigan... That is another thing we saw again this time around--you never know, and you don't know what factors will come into play. The Beach Boys sang a song about Southern California women. Schools like Stanford and Notre Dame offer outstanding educations and networks too. Michigan is always up against it.
Nate Johnson recommitted, or chose. Slot, wideout, even DB, it says they really want speed, athleticism, and touchdowns. He joins several other good ones.
Rashan Gary to Michigan is not a surprise but it is still great news. There were some pretty overt clues, such as hiring his high school coach and signing all his friends and/or New Jersey's prep stars. Aside from the homely atmosphere, it is a comfortable, depth chart- and playing time-wise, situation. Maybe now Ms. Coney will shut up. Oh, and there is Greg Mattison--can't miss the opportunity to be coached by him.
Always exceed expectations...
Devin Asiasi. No matter the route. He could be a good one. Devastating blocker. Actions meet mouth: everyone knows Harbaugh likes tight ends and Michigan signed three diverse and excellent ones.
Sticking with Dytarious.
Nice pics. Brad Hawkins:
