(Pete) Lembo is the third former FBS head coach to join Durkin's staff at Maryland. Durkin has hired former Virginia coach Mike London as associate head coach and defensive line coach, and ex-Syracuse coach Scott Shafer to be the Terps' defensive coordinator.
New Maryland head coach D.J. Durkin officially hired 31-year-old Walt Bell as his offensive coordinator on Sunday, calling him "one of the brightest offensive minds in college football." Bell spent the past two seasons overseeing an explosive Arkansas State offense that averaged 41 points per game in 2015. Bell uses some creative formations, and his Red Wolves averaged 74.9 plays per game this year. To put that in perspective, only three Big Ten teams (Illinois, Indiana and Purdue) managed 75 snaps per game this season. (espn)
"3x the salary," but it is closer to 4x, plus he is now a head coach. The contract shows Maryland is behind it. It is a chance to do something meaningful at a place with potential.
It is not likely they will really complete with Michigan State, Ohio State, and now/again Michigan for some time, if at all. And for Durkin, the prodigy, only 37 years old and all that, he could be a little in over his head.
When they're gone they're gone.
